Versatility and performance
Waterborne polyurethane dispersions for high-performance adhesives
Adhesive manufacturers are changing to waterborne alternatives because of their improved environmental profile and high performance. Waterborne raw materials from Covestro are more sustainable, with comparable performance, than solventborne materials.
Our Dispercoll® products consist of aqueous, anionic dispersions of high molecular weight polyurethanes formulated without co-solvents. Crystalline resins are generally used for heat-activated adhesives, while amorphous products exhibit room-temperature tack and are particularly useful for the lamination of flexible films.
Key properties of adhesives based on Dispercoll® waterborne polyurethane dispersions include:
- Excellent initial bond strength
- Rapid bond strength development
- High final bond strength (including substrates that are difficult to bond, e.g. PVC)
- Good thermal resistance
- Good resistance against humidity, oil and chemicals
- Considerable formulating freedom and the ability to tailor properties for specific applications
Dispercoll® U polyurethanes are frequently used for the formulation of one-component (1K) adhesives. They are also used in conjunction with water-dispersible polyisocyanate crosslinkers (Bayhydur® or Desmodur®) to achieve even higher performance.
The wide selection of our Dispercoll® U polyurethane dispersions allows adhesive formulators the ability to develop customized, high-performance adhesive solutions for many different thermo-activated and room-temperature bonding products. They are used in furniture, automotive, textile, footwear, construction and flexible packaging applications.
